December, 2017:  The meaning of the name Paula comes from the Latin, meaning small. Beautiful Paula has some huge skin issues, all due to neglect, indifference and stupidity? on the part of her former owner. This individual apparently doesn't even have an excuse, because Paula and her dear littermate Matthew were left out in their desert enclosure all day, every day no matter the weather. They were allowed inside at night, however, you are about to hear what constant exposure to the desert sun does to a poor dog... Paula's skin is so damaged that she has open, oozing lesions that can't even be closed with skin glue. She's needed two surgeries to alleviate some of the more serious sores, but she is going to need continued and intensive therapy to heal. This is what 5 YEARS in the sun and desert sun at that) does to skin. Perhaps it would be instructive to have this former "owner" zip-tied to a cactus without sun block. Dear Paula and her sweet brother are very bonded and during Paula's recovery from surgery, she'd cry for her brother's company. They are in wonderful, loving hands now with the RescueAngels of Doberman Rescue of Nevada. Once Paula is well - Matthew, too, who has his own medical issues - a perfect home will definitely be found where they can live out their precious lives together. December, 2017:  The handsome fellow you see before you is none other than five year young Matthew. Matthew and his bonded sister were dumped when they became nothing more than in the way. They didn’t do anything wrong, they simply were just not wanted any longer. Their living conditions were basic at best as their daily existence consisted merely of roasting outside in the hot desert sun. Matthew is covered with callouses and granulomas from many years of having only rock hard surfaces to lie on. Nutrition was nothing more than a 50 lb bag of open dog food that not only they could invade at anytime but the desert critters could help themselves as well. It’s no surprise that veterinary care was totally nonexistent. Matthew is grossly obese weighing a whopping 140 pounds and is also hypothyroid. He also has wicked mouth pain caused by horribly inflamed gums along with broken and infected teeth. One tooth is so badly infected you can actually see the root of the tooth! Matthew’s hypothyroidism needs to be addressed and significant dental surgery needs to be done ASAP. The Rescue Angels of Doberman Rescue of Nevada have once again come to the aide of a Dobe with medical needs that simply cannot wait, and they will indeed see that Matthew is restored to health. However, due to the numerous Dobes DRNV have taken under their wings, they have come to SND for assistance regarding Matthew’s oral surgery. December , 2017: With great sadness we must report that dear Ronnie didn't survive his past physical problems of malnourishment and heartworm and the havoc that must have wreaked on his body... He was released with love to the peace he didn't find in this life.  We thank the RescueAngels at BDR for giving him the chance.  Rest in peace now dear Prince...
November, 2017:  Ronnie isn’t your typical heartworm positive 2 year old—he came with a chain too. He also has buckshot imbedded in him. He was found running loose with the chain dragging behind him. He was also emaciated and somewhat defensive. No doubt his first 2 years were a living hell, but the RescueAngels of Bluegrass Doberman Rescue are determined to change his outlook on life. His foster mom is also a trainer and she’s teaching him to give our species another chance, and he is trying hard to trust us. We all know with sweet Melissa in charge, he’ll get there. He does to have love to give—he loves other dogs! He does, however, need to lose the dreaded heartworm. BDR and SND are determined to help this boy get healthy and happy! Won’t you join us? November, 2017:  It seems like we have had way too many dobes dumped by their caring "owners" lately! Well folks we have another. A sweet, lovely two years young little blue girl whose owners didn't have the character to take her somewhere that could help her and admit they couldn't afford to pay for her care! There are places like that around! Of course if they had paid any diligence or even cared... maybe she wouldn't have gotten hit by a car! As she was not yet spayed, it's likely she was destined to become a BYB Greeder's cash cow - vet care would have diminished the returns. I guess not everyone loves their Dobes like we do. Andrea was "turned in" to a South Los Angeles shelter as a stray (yeah, right) with a crushed leg on October 25th. Rescue assistance was requested and enter the RescueAngels from Dobies and Little Paws Rescue in California who picked her up on October 31st. After two different vets looked at the x-rays of her crushed leg, amputation was recommended. Her surgery was performed on November the 2nd and she is recovering well. Andrea has endeared herself to all she meets, especially her foster people. Her prognosis is very good for a full recovery and I am sure she won't have any problem finding a loving home. As for the poor excuse for humans who dumped her... well I shouldn't say here what should happen to them - but you can fill in the blank. Of course her surgery was very expensive and DALPR can use all the help we can give to help pay the bills. October, 2017:  They say a society is judged by the way they treat their animals...  No offense to any of you, after all, you care, or you wouldn’t be reading this, but if these humans are representative - our society is in BIG trouble!   Here we have Miss C.J., a two-year-old who was abandoned by her “family” when they moved. No one was told, no effort made for her future, they just plain left her like the rest of the garbage they didn’t want. After, and I quote, waiting a few WEEKS, the neighbors made a call and C.J. was saved. Thankfully, the RescueAngels of San Antonio Doberman Advocacy and Rescue took in this little one. TWO years old, only 2, what a lovely age and they sold up and left her--taking everything they valued. Looking at this beautiful cropped and docked Lady, perhaps she was to be this BYGreeder's cash cow and had been bred already...  Maybe she didn't produce many little $$ at once?  What could have more value than your Doberman???? These blemishes on our society do not deserve a Doberman - or any other animal - all of which are better than they.  So… thanks to SADAR, she gets a chance at a real home, a forever home. Only one thing stands in the way, my personal most hated bug, heartworms. Of course, she would have them, she lived in the back yard with the trash, poor baby. October, 2017: It's been said that we live in the most enlightened country in the world, but after you read this, I promise you'll have your justifiable doubts. This little angel is J.J., who has been rescued by San Antonio Doberman Rescue and Advocacy. It's suspected Miss J.J. is somewhere around 5 years old, although she looks far older - the reason being is that it's doubtful J.J. ever had a home. Ever. She was discovered in an area where it is common practice to dump animals, letting them fend for themselves, so one can easily imagine the horrors these poor innocent creatures encounter on a daily basis. This baby has a miserable skin condition, she's heartworm positive AND she's missing an eye. No one will ever know the terrible things she's faced, but she's true to her Doberman nature - loving, smart and ever grateful for some help and love. We are ever grateful ourselves for SADAR and their volunteers for their never ending commitment to help the downtrodden and forgotten Dobermans of the world. October, 2017:  WOW! They don’t get much more handsome than Falcon, our newest DoberDUDE at about 4 years old! Falcon found his way to SND when the RescueAngels of Doberman Pinscher Rescue in Fillmore, California received an email informing them of an approximately four year old Dobe in a shelter with a broken leg! His leg had been splinted by the shelter vet to provide support to it until he could, hopefully, be pulled by a rescue and have his leg thoroughly evaluated and treated. Falcon obviously needed surgery right away before the break became too old to fix or infection set in and of course to provide very much needed pain relief. Luckily, he was able to have his surgery right after DPR saved him, but he has to stay at the hospital for a few days to be monitored, especially since the break was indeed an older one. The additional observation days will boost the costs of Falcon’s care even higher. Our DPR angels tell us that Falcon is "phenomenal, sweet and... gorgeous" and never loses his darling disposition! October, 2017:  Those of you familiar with the SND Senior Doberman Project may already know Midas. For those who don’t… read on! Midas is a 9 year young owner surrender. He had no hair, which even for a fawn is unusual. In truth he had a bad skin infection, probably from a sub-par diet (and let’s not even get into the owner’s shortcomings). Medicated baths, some antibiotics and good food have hair sprouting out all over. He was a little nervous at first, in a kennel environment, but has calmed down completely in his foster home. In fact, he is your typical focused Velcro-boy. Got some string cheese or other treats? You got him—100%. He is a really good boy, even-tempered and fine with another grumpy dog… what a sweetie! Like all Velcro Dobes, he wants his humans in sight, but also benefits from the companionship of another dog. Sounds perfect, huh? Well, now for the reason I’m bringing him to you today. Along with the skin infection came some growths, most of which have been aspirated and are no worry. One of those looks very suspicious and the vet feels it is perhaps a mast cell tumor. On October 20th he’s having it removed and sent for biopsy. October, 2017:  This gorgeous puppy, Frances, is an excellent example of why Special Needs Dobermans needs you. Dear Frances comes to us from Doberman Pinscher Rescue of Pennsylvania.  She was surrendered to them at 12 weeks old from another small all-breed rescue that didn't have the resources to treat this baby's litany of troubles. And a litany of issues was soon discovered! Poor Frances was born with an under-developed urinary sphincter, consequently little Frances leaked constantly. She also had an undeveloped ovary, which initially was thought to be a testicle... AND her vulva and rectum were structurally too close together. This little 5 1/2 month old baby has undergone extensive surgery to correct and alleviate her plumbing problems, but she is so very young that her vet feels she will need to have expensive injections similar to Botox to tighten her sphincter for a year - until she matures enough so she can be put on DES or Proin. This adorable little angel was originally surrendered to the small rescue by her breeder - we have to wonder if said backyard greeder knew of the extent of Frances's medical problems. Although it's irrelevant, as our baby has had her surgery, we are infinitely grateful the greeder simply didn't "eliminate" her - AND that Frances found her way (with help of the small rescue) to RescueAngel Trish of DPRPA. However, Doberman Rescues being usually pressed financially and Frances's ongoing vet bills are well over $5000.000 even after discounts. It is abundantly clear Frances would be history without DPRPA and their able vet. Please, think of your beloved Dobes when they were babies - then have a look at dear Frances's face. October, 2017:  Two-year-old Pierce is a Hurricane Harvey survivor. He was pulled out of the water and taken to the Citizens for Animal Protection shelter on September 5th. He was evaluated and started on Gentamicin drops for his cloudy eyes, and it was noted he was intact and of good weight. They held him for 6 days, hoping an owner would retrieve him, but no one came forward to claim him. Houston Area Doberman Rescue then took him in on September 12th. Clearly someone had been taking care of this sweet boy.  He’s house-trained and crate-trained. He even sits nicely for his eye drops! So here we are at Pierce’s problem (other than the hurricane and the water and the hell of that). He has cataracts. One eye has more swelling than the other, and his lenses are smaller than usual. He is mostly seeing shadows now, or the distortion between light and dark. He has a hard time with differing surfaces due to lack of depth perception, but he’s a really sweet guy trying hard to deal with his disability. There are many things he can’t see at all but he follows voice commands and hand touching. His surgery is scheduled and he’s doing a little better with several types of drops. He’s managing better in the house and shaded yard too with the help of a nice Doberman friend. I can picture it, can’t you? Damn these dogs are special! Houston Area Doberman Rescue is still trying to find the original owner, contacting vets and eye specialists in the Katy area. Someone must know this boy, he is so memorable! But in the meantime, his eyes must be operated on, he has years of things to see! If it isn’t his old family he sees—it will be the new home’s welcoming arms. October, 2017: Here's a story that will keep you up at night...Teddy is a gorgeous 16 month old male pup who was from Tennessee. One day, he was riding in his "person's" convertible when dear Teddy decided to jump out. His subsequent fall resulted in a fracture of his left femur. He had several other injuries but the fracture was the worst and that doesn't even address the awful pain he was in. It was then that his "owner" surrendered him because he refused to even purchase pain medication for Teddy. Not only is Teddy's former "owner" incredibly stupid, but he's also callous beyond description... After Teddy was surrendered, he was brought to the attention of Cindy from Doberman Underground. Wonderful Cindy has been a friend of Dobermans longer than I have been a Case Manager, and I've always been in awe of the Dobes she's rescued as well as the lives she's brought back to health and happiness. He was immediately taken to an emergency vet, where a plate was installed in the fracture, but the plate failed due to poor circulation. Cindy conferred with both a general practice vet as well as an orthopedic vet and it was decided Teddy would need amputation to assure a normal and happy life. He has now had his surgery and is making progress every day. Doberman Underground is an amazing organization that takes on the most grievously injured and sick Dobes. They, too, rely on donations to do their important work and they have come to SND for financial assistance. October 9 , 2017: With many tears of sadness, Nash's Angel said a very sad goodbye to a sweet young DobeBoy, dear Nash...  We all had hoped he would have a longer time to savor the love being lavished on him, but, his cancer returned with a vengeance and he was released with the same love that had mightily tried to help him.  Rest in peace dear one and twinkle on in the Night Sky in Sirius' Garden. 
September, 2017:  At just a year old, sweet Nash is an amazing DobeBoy. It’s hard to figure out why any owner would dump a dog this behaviorally perfect into a shelter. Perhaps his limp…. hmmm, could this be the problem? Nash arrived at Dobies & Little Paws Rescue with a limp in his front right leg. Initially they treated him for a pinched nerve, but, even with medication, his limp became worse. That is until, x-rays showed a bone degeneration indicative of bone cancer. He needed an immediate leg amputation for any chance at all for survival. Even so his prognosis is guarded. So, the loving owners he was such a perfect boy for, apparently couldn’t or wouldn’t help him, love him or comfort him. Well, Dobies and Little Paws Rescue will-- and so will SND. What about you? His ongoing need may be hospice, but whatever it is, I’m sure this great Doberman community will love, help and comfort him through it all. September, 2017: It is my honor to introduce you to beautiful Irma. This heartbreakingly beautiful senior girl found herself ill and unclaimed in a Georgia shelter. However, we have reason to be very happy, because Irma was discovered by an incomparable Doberman advocate, Jane Fratesi of Atlanta Doberman Rescue. Jane whisked Irma out of the shelter and got her to her veterinarian. Dear Irma has some hind end weakness and has the typical thin coat of a blue Doberman, but that is not what brings Irma to SND. Irma's chest x-show some white spots on her lungs, and there is one near or on her heart. She also is heartworm positive, and we fear she is carrying a heavy load, as she is coughing at times.  Before contemplating treatment for heartworm, she is scheduled to visit the cardiologist to be certain her heart is strong enough to withstand the immiticide.  Despite all this, Irma is happy, eating and delighting everyone she comes in contact with. Clearly, she is demonstrating that amazing canine diplomacy - she is grateful and loving to everyone she encounters. Atlanta Doberman Rescue is one of the most well established and well run rescues in the country and they have been saving many dogs for many years. Recently, the devastating hurricane Irma swept across the deep south and Atlanta Doberman Rescue was there, actively saving animals across the devastated area. This takes not only amazing people, but huge resources as well. Our dear Irma is just one example of what Atlanta Doberman Rescue does. UPDATE September 11, 2017: Miss Ginger can't seem to catch a break!  After everything she's been through and her initial promising recovery, she's back in the hospital pending diagnosis and likely surgery for a possible liver shunt.  She just kept getting sicker and labs showed elevated liver and bile acids increasing. No shunt was found with diagnostic ultrasound so surgery is on for the 13th.  We've come so far to not at least try to save this little trooper!  We are asking you once again for major help with these new expenses... July, 2017:  Sweet and petite Ginger is only 9 months old, just a little baby. It’s likely she has been in pain for a good portion of her short life. Her “family” did take her to the vet—2 in fact. They were less competent than most of us would accept and they certainly did nothing for Ginger’s pain. She would then return to the “family” home to be mauled by children. Her obvious leg pain was dismissed as “growing pains” by the first vet. The second vet didn’t catch anything either—but did find crystals in her urine, putting her on antibiotics. Eventually her pain and their “playful” behavior led to the story that she had bitten 2 of the children. Ginger had to go. Luckily, she went directly into the loving arms of sweet Melissa (who seriously doubts the biting story) and Bluegrass Doberman Rescue. The blood work from the 2nd vet was off in so many ways, Melissa knew she had to start over and find out what all was going on with this 45-pound Dober-girlie. First of all, the growing pains are un-united anconeal process. This means the growth plates in her elbows never fused. This will require surgery once her other issues are dealt with. She has struvite crystals in her urine, nothing to be treated with antibiotics; however, a special diet can help with that… Now for the last problem—and it can be a biggie. Ginger most likely has Addison’s Disease. The first test showed her at 0.6 cortisol when normal is 1 to 5. She is being retested to confirm the diagnosis. If confirmed she will need very expensive Percorten and prednisone for the rest of her life. Quite a list of issues to cope with—but this is Melissa we’re talking about here—we all know she won’t give up on a Dobe in need! Not as long as there is a breath in her body and a dime in her pocket! Melissa says Ginger is as sweet as she is petite. She loves dogs, cats, even the kittens Melissa is fostering. She is so loving and adorable, she must wonder what the kids were doing to her if in fact she did nip. She plays well with everything but when she starts hurting or doesn’t feel well, she loves to crawl under something until she feels better. Lately she has decided this should be under Melissa’s legs. September, 2017: This most handsome and beautiful boy is aptly named Rockstar was surrendered by his owner to an Oregon shelter.  This because the owner could no longer afford treatments for what was "suspected as skin allergies." The kind people at the shelter found that our star actually had Demodex - which any vet could have told his former people.   The shelter successfully treated him for that, then contacted our hero, certifiable RescueAngel Dana Johnson of Northern California Doberman Rescue to pick him up and place him.  When our RockStar arrived in California, it was immediately noted that he's very, very sweet, smart and had a BIG problem - he couldn't urinate. He was taken to their capable veterinarians where it was discovered that poor Rock not only had a raging bladder infection, but had a stone at the end of his urethra...OUCH!!! Not only is this a very painful condition, but it can turn to imminently life threatening.  Rockstar had his surgery las month and his prognosis is wonderful. He's had a couple minor bumps in the road, but he continues to recover well and is charming everyone around him...soon, it will be time to find his forever family. As one can imagine, Rock's surgery and diagnostics did not come cheaply. Northern California has been saving countless Dobermans for years now - all on donations. They have come to SND to help raise funds to pay for Rockstar's surgical bills. How can you resist this face??? September, 2017: Just look at the face on this Pretty Boy! At 4 years old, he still thinks he’s a puppy! We’ll never know his early life—he was a stray in a South Carolina shelter... not unlike MANY others. We do know he was slated for death because he’s heartworm positiveand that was whose fault?? Sweet Melissa and Bluegrass Doberman Rescue scooped him right up—and everyone who met him on his way there fell for him. You are in danger of thousands of puppy kisses if he can reach you! August, 2017:  Feast your eyes on beautiful Sasha, an amazing 5 1/2 year old girl that found herself the victim of apathy and neglect by her former owner. This individual chose to surrender Sasha to the local shelter rather than have her spayed, have her ear issues resolved or most importantly, have the ominous lump on her side addressed or even have the courage or decency to pay to have her euthanized humanely! She has obviously been bred again and again but those profits didn't go to her care... Fortunately, Sasha found herself in the company of the RescueAngels of Doberman Pinscher Rescue of Pennsylvania... and things are finally looking up for this lovely girl.  Sasha is vWd affected, which complicates her prospective surgery enormously. Clotting factor is expensive, and dear Sasha needs to be under the knife for awhile to assure a favorable outcome. The surgery, too, will be expensive, but just look at this beautiful girl's face - she is priceless! DPRPA is a small rescue, but does everything possible to assure the health and successful placement of their sweet Dobermans. Sasha's case will carry a huge financial burden - could be upwards of $7000.00 depending on surgical complications - BUT, her prognosis is good and she is a happy and sweet girl.  Won't you join DPRPA and SND by sending in a donation to help pay for this dear girl's surgery? August, 2017:  It’s my honor to introduce to you SND’s newest Dobergent - Logan! At approximately 5 years of age, this fellow has reportedly been bounced around throughout his life. It’s also been reported he was used as a stud for who knows how many "backyard greeder" litters. And his thanks for being a money maker? His thanks was landing in an animal control shelter. Now lets enter the Rescue Angels of Top Dog Rescue located in Michigan. Logan’s Angels were quickly aware Logan was a wonderful boy, with a gentle and loving disposition, despite having been passed around from greeder to greeder and despite a suspicious swelling with blistering above his right front paw. An antibiotic regimen was completed with little change. Costly tests were performed to find the cause of Logan’s resistantance to healing wound. A biopsy finally revealed the dreaded diagnosis of fibrosarcoma. Of all the options presented for further treatment, amputation was decided to be Logan’s most permanent solution to remove the cancer and be able to enjoy years to come. Logan’s vet visits, diagnostic testing and upcoming amputation could deplete any rescue’s bank account. TDR is an all breed dog and cat rescue and supports out of state high kill shelters and more challenging adoption situations. The TDR Angels have stepped forward to save one of our own, and hopefully we will support them by providing much needed donations! Your gift is tax deductible and NO amount is ever too small!! August, 2017: When it rains, it pours in Texas... at least where unwanted Dobermans are concerned, it's always a deluge!  And here's another...  At 6 years old, Jackson ran out of luck. His family was shattered forever by divorce—and NO ONE could take him. Really? No One? How loved was he? Poor boy! To make his life worse, he had a mast cell tumor on one leg. Thankfully he went to the Angels of San Antonio Doberman Advocacy and Rescue. The tumor is fairly low grade, his prognosis is fairly good. Some 90% of these are benign when clean margins are achieved, however the location on his leg didn’t give them much tissue to dig around in, making recurrence more likely. Jackson deserves a chance! He is a real love-bug toward anything that walks or crawls. Look at him… how can you not want to help that face find a home? August, 2017:  Just look at how beautiful and focused this gorgeous girl is! She is almost perfect! She was adopted from San Antonio Doberman Advocacy and Rescue six years ago—but at 9 ½ years old she leaks a little… Certainly nothing to freak out about for most of us.  Her callous, poor excuse for an owner decided he didn’t want to deal with her Proin and dumped her back on the rescue. He never even said good-bye. She cried for days in the kennel when she first came back—she had no idea why she wasn’t at home with her family. At that sad time, she couldn't know this was actually good riddance to her past... This is a very delightful girl with lots of get up and go. She is so determined to please, loving any attention she can get, it is unfortunate her age seems to deter people from adopting her. Her chances of finding another home just got even slimmer. She has just had a tumor removed from her left rear leg. The biopsy results are due back August 15th. We’re all hoping for the best for this angel… please join us in wishing her well! August, 2017:  Meet our newest enchanting beauty, Harley. Harley was surrendered to the amazing volunteers of San Antonio Doberman Advocacy and Rescue by a college student, who pulled her from a shelter. The claim was that the shelter was moving to euthanize this dear baby - she's only 2 - because of her GI issues that have some vets stumped as to the cause. Harley has been having bloody diarrhea for weeks and has been put on a cornucopia of medications without satisfactory results. She has also had several CBC's done that don't raise any red flags. Even though this sweetie may feel okay, she really needs this issue resolved, so she can be welcomed into a new family that will treasure her. The next diagnostic step will be some more testing - possibly an ultrasound and endoscopy. This testing is expensive, but when you have such a young patient with unexplained GI distress, it is truly necessary. As the owner of a young Dobe diagnosed with IBD, I know that value of getting these issues resolved. My Hesper is now in remission and is doing very well driving the household nuts - the way every young Dobe should live! UPDATE August 24, 2017:  Miss Ginger had her double elbow surgeries yesterday and came through fantastically!!  So much so that she will be liberated today!  We all THANK YOU who helped Ginger come to this healthy place!!  She has charmed all around her and might even have smitten a potential Forever Mom!!  We wish you a healthy and happy life Ginger!!
July, 2017:  Sweet and petite Ginger is only 9 months old, just a little baby. It’s likely she has been in pain for a good portion of her short life. Her “family” did take her to the vet—2 in fact. They were less competent than most of us would accept and they certainly did nothing for Ginger’s pain. She would then return to the “family” home to be mauled by children. Her obvious leg pain was dismissed as “growing pains” by the first vet. The second vet didn’t catch anything either—but did find crystals in her urine, putting her on antibiotics. Eventually her pain and their “playful” behavior led to the story that she had bitten 2 of the children. Ginger had to go. Luckily, she went directly into the loving arms of sweet Melissa (who seriously doubts the biting story) and Bluegrass Doberman Rescue. The blood work from the 2nd vet was off in so many ways, Melissa knew she had to start over and find out what all was going on with this 45-pound Dober-girlie. First of all, the growing pains are un-united anconeal process. This means the growth plates in her elbows never fused. This will require surgery once her other issues are dealt with. She has struvite crystals in her urine, nothing to be treated with antibiotics; however, a special diet can help with that… Now for the last problem—and it can be a biggie. Ginger most likely has Addison’s Disease. The first test showed her at 0.6 cortisol when normal is 1 to 5. She is being retested to confirm the diagnosis. If confirmed she will need very expensive Percorten and prednisone for the rest of her life. Quite a list of issues to cope with—but this is Melissa we’re talking about here—we all know she won’t give up on a Dobe in need! Not as long as there is a breath in her body and a dime in her pocket! Melissa says Ginger is as sweet as she is petite. She loves dogs, cats, even the kittens Melissa is fostering. She is so loving and adorable, she must wonder what the kids were doing to her if in fact she did nip. She plays well with everything but when she starts hurting or doesn’t feel well, she loves to crawl under something until she feels better. Lately she has decided this should be under Melissa’s legs. July, 2017:   This grrreat young gentleman is Powell, a wonderful young (estimated to be 1 1/2 years young) Doberman who found himself in a California shelter with a broken ankle. As soon as he arrived at the shelter, Powell immediately charmed his way into the hearts of every employee at the shelter, and those humans then scrambled to get Doberman Pinscher Rescue in Fillmore to take him - and of course, Ardis and company scooped up this handsome boy as soon as they heard about him. He was listed as a stray and no one seemed to know anything about him or the fresh fracture to his leg. Dear Powell is now safe and scheduled for surgery tomorrow, July 17th. It is an expensive procedure, but promises to fix Powell's leg so the fracture to his ankle will be a distant memory in his - hopefully - happy and long, prosperous future. Dobies and Little Paws Rescue saves countless Dobermans and puts them in loving forever homes. They have been in operation for many years and the only way they can operate is by donations they can garner. July, 2017:  Meet Boo-Boo, who is prophetically named. At 4 years old, she was picked up as a stray in Stockton, California. No one claimed this all-natural girl but she was lucky enough to be saved by Rescue Angels at Northern California Doberman Rescue. There was only one snag in finding her forever home, her poor undocked tail. It bore witness to 4 years of damage, scarring everywhere—with fresh injuries occurring daily. I’m not trying to open the crop/dock can of worms here, but this girl wouldn’t have had a life of pain if her tail had been docked as a puppy. As it happens, after watching her open new wounds for a few days, the decision was made to amputate her tail. That is what it is at this point in life, a more complicated and painful amputation but a pain that will subside once that surgery heals. She has had her surgery now and she came through very well. I hear she even has tolerated the Cone of Shame for 10 days with little fuss. Boo-Boo is just a delightful dog, very upbeat! Her tail is always moving, hence all the previous damage! July 27 , 2017: With very great sadness, we say a most sad goodbye to a beautiful Senior DobeGent, Bernie... We hoped for more but that was not to be.  You touched many hearts with your gentle ways and you will be sorely missed, most especially by Danielle who gave you her heart and home.  Bernie did not die alone and not before he was shown so much love in such a short time.  Gambol in Sirius' Garden in the Night Sky and twinkle down on us forever!!  Good night Sweet Prince...
UPDATE July 14, 2017:  Mr. Bernie has bad news and good news - first the bad...  the awful wound on his face was harboring a mass which pathology ruled sarcoma.  The good news is his lungs are clear and the BEST news is that he will be in hospice care - being loved and spoiled rotten for the rest of his life by a phenomenal Foster Family. They adore Bernie and tell us he's doing very well and has fit right in happy as a clam!!  THANK YOU Fosters and thank you donors for making this a very wonderful rest of his life for this amazing Dobe!!
July, 2017:   I’d like to introduce to y’all to SND’s newest Dobergent, Bernie, who is approximately nine years young and said to be one of the nicest, friendliest and sweetest boys ever! Bernie’s past is a total mystery, so allow me to tell you all that we do know. Bernie was discovered at a shelter in San Bernardino, CA with the label ‘stray’ attached to him. He was terribly dirty, incredibly smelly and had an open wound on his snout oozing odorous blood and pus. This shelter is notorious for killing animals quickly, especially unhealthy ones, and Bernie’s kill date had been set for the very day the angels from Doberman Rescue of Nevada stepped in to save him. Misdiagnosed at the shelter with having eye and nasal infections, DRNV’s vet quickly diagnosed Bernie with severe dental infection. The infection was so widespread that the pressure from the build up of pus on the roof of his mouth literally perforated through his snout causing the drainage of blood and pus! The pain he had to have been experiencing would’ve been horrendous, yet he remained a Darling of a Doberman!! Surgery was a long three hours, and the exudates were sent to pathology to ensure Bernie doesn’t have any additional troublesome diagnoses. It would only have been a short matter of time until the abcess(es) would have indeed caused sepsis leading to Bernie’s death, so surgery was needed ASAP. And now it’s time for US to step up and support DRNV and Bernie. DRNV is funded fully by donations. July, 2017:  Meet Jeffrey! This 2-year-old is one of so many dogs who fall through the cracks and are lost (read:  destroyed). His case is not startling and I have come to you often to speak for dogs in his situation. He is heartworm positive and homeless. He was turned into Animal Control in a Texas city by a college student - supposedly a stray she wasn’t permitted to keep in her dorm room. Animal Control slated him to be destroyed, hopefully in a humane way... This may be true, all of it. None of that matters now… what matters now is that the RescueAngels of San Antonio Doberman Advocacy and Rescue saved him. Of course, to finish saving his life those pesky and always painfully fatal heartworms must be addressed. We all know SADAR will heal him - probably he will go on to be the adored Dober-boy of some Texas home, but there is always a cost. May, 2017:   Kind, gentle Willow is 6 years old and unwanted. No one is sure why, she is the perfect dog… unless it’s because she needs expensive surgery that will slow her down for quite a while. Willow has 2 (YES, TWO!!) torn ACL's and requires TPLO surgery on both. I can’t even tell you how long she has badly needed this surgery as we wouldn’t even know about her except for one lucky event, no one wanted her anymore. Willow and a companion were surrendered to a shelter to be executed.  The shelter promptly called the Rescue Angels at United Doberman Rescue. Get this... these two beautiful Dobes were dumped because their "person" was going on vacation, could not find anyone to care for them and so he wanted them both gone.  The shelter asked if they could adopt them out and he replied that he thought it would be best to kill them as he was afraid they would end up in someone’s hands that would hurt them” -- REALLY???? We wish this coward the vacation he deserves - you know the one... the one from HELL! As so often happens, abandonment was salvation. Doberman #2 (he had a dump-number, but hey!! HE'S a noble DOBERMAN!!) was placed quickly, having the same wonderful temperament - but poor Willow needs our help before she can think of finding her forever home too. She is such a loving dog, she lets the little puppy fosters crawl all over her and treats them just like their momma would. She is perfect in every way—except for her knees! The prognosis is a 90% chance of full recovery and a happy life, doing both knees at once. Right now, she is on amazing, but expensive, Galliprant for pain while we fundraise for her oh-so costly surgery. So… United Doberman Rescue came to SND and we have joined them in this very worthy cause. Please, please help to be someone who takes her pain away forever! She needs you so badly right now! May, 2017:   Here is fair warning - Cassie's story is going to stay with you for years to come. Sometime the past month, this dear, beautiful dog found herself in a busy California shelter. She looked to be about 9 years old and had several mammary masses that were bleeding and very angry. In spite of the wretched discomfort she was probably in, Cassie impressed the shelter staff so much with her gentle, sweet personalty that they went searching for a rescue that would take her. Given the number of discarded like garbage pets the shelters deal with day in and day out, you know knocking on rescue's door must be difficult - this speaks to the impression this DobeLady made... The RescueAngels at Dobes and Little Paws Rescue were happy to oblige, and Cassie was off to get her veterinary workup - something she probably have never had.  On examination, Cassie was observed to have several bleeding nipples due to her mammary masses - an obvious red flag of more ominous trouble. She had surgery to remove the complete mammary chains bilaterally and was spayed. Bad news came with the return of the pathology report. Cassie has mammary cancer. Dobe and Little Paws contacted SND to seek funds to assist them paying for Cassie's surgery, and we are honored to help this dear, sweet angel. No one knows how much time dear Cassie has left, but we are determined that Cassie will live out her time with love and comfort. Dobe and Little Paws has a wonderful hospice foster lined up who is already in love with this dear, wonderful girl.  Because of your donations, rescues such as Dobes and Little Paws can help dogs like Cassie get treatment they need to keep them pain free and comfortable. UPDATE May 30, 2017:  Miss Cedar has had her surgery and it became obvious that the fracture was older than apparent in the pre-op s-xrays - Of course a more complicated surgery has added additional expense too.  This is her update from her loving caregivers: "Cedar had surgery on her leg on Saturday [May 27]. The vet found the break to be older than we thought, so surgery was somewhat more complicated than expected. After care and physical therapy will be bit more then we expected. HOWEVER, Cedar has yet another Animal Care Staff member who is helping her. Lisa, since day one, has been Cedar's loving caregiver. Cedar stays on a blanket near Lisa's desk during work days and goes home with her at night and on weekends. Lisa has the experience and commitment to see Cedar through her recovery time. May, 2017:   This breathtaking (likely around 4 mounths old) puppy is now known as Cedar.  We don't know her prior name - or even if she had one - because she was found, apparently abandoned, by a cowardly "owner" in a park in Mendocino County in California.  Of course, we call that cowardly at best and we can think of much worse because this person never bothered to seek out this waif... A caring person found this DobeGirlie and brought her to Mendocino Animal Services. Sage, the shelter manager, took one look at this beautiful baby and immediately detected a problem with Cedar's left front leg. Off to the shelter's caring veterinarian, who x-rayed Cedar's leg and discovered a very nasty fracture of the distal humerus (the long bone in the foreleg - see below). Cedar was in immediate need of pain meds and surgery - an immediate and less costly alternative was amputation - but who could subject a 4 month old puppy to that if that could be avoided??  Not her RescueAngel Sage!  Cedar's surgery is estimated to be well over $2000.00, so rather than have this dear baby wait, Sage paid the deposit for the operation out of her own money and contacted Special Needs Dobermans. Cedar's prognosis is excellent and we soon hope to hear when she is running and playing.  We can't in all consciousness let Sage bear the personal brunt for this - she, like all of us, have our own financial obligations - Sage obviously and unhesitatingly put Cedar's outcome first.  Sage is the perfect example of what a compassionate and discerning shelter manager should be. April, 2017:  Miss Ireland is working on getting the full Luck o' The Irish - but she's hit another snag on the way.  She is now facing TWO surgeries - the first will address mammary tumors which should be excised immediately!  X-rays show her lungs are clear so she's safe from metastases there!  Finally, good news wrapped in a scare!  These must be taken care of ASAP before she can be considered fit for the amputation planned.  This means two surgeries and two times the expense as you can guess - please, please, please... help us help DRR save this DobeLady!!  Send her your best thoughts and $$ if you are able!!  Thanks!!
March, 2017:  Poor little Ireland is only 2 years old and she already has little reason to like humans. She was abandoned by her “family” and was not found for WEEKS after they moved away. At some point, before or after they left her, she was badly injured. No one but she knows how or when. She was found by animal control on March 16th, emaciated and in pain - and because her condition was so grave, they planned to euthanize her—unless rescue would take her. So, on the 17th and in the nick of time, RescueAngel Diane of Dobie Ranch Rescue saved her and she is now in her loving arms and care. Her left front paw was completely crushed and her right rear leg is also injured. Unfortunately, her paw is clearly beyond saving so she faces amputation. As soon as she is strong enough for surgery, she will begin the road back to wellness. After losing her leg, fixing her other leg and a spay, this cutie will be ready for a home that won’t move and not tell her they’re going!! May, 2017: Sweet Georgia Brown is yet another DobeLady who was thrown away like trash. Picked up on the streets and taken to an animal shelter, the RescueAngels of Dobies and Little Paws Rescue, located in southern California, had to wait until her stray hold was up until they could get her the medical attention she so desperately needed. You see, she had a gigantic cancerous-looking mammary tumor that was so massive it had actually ruptured, so it had obviously been growing for a very long time! The odor of the drainage was atrocious as you could imagine. Bad enough for her caretakers but can you imagine what this DobeLady must have been experiencing? Her RescueAngels were quite heartbroken when they saw the terrible condition she was in. At approximately 5 years of age, Sweet Georgia was most likely used as a breeding machine before being tossed aside. She has had her surgery and as you can guess, the cost of her procedure and aftercare was quite costly. Her lung x-rays were clear and her surgeon was pleased at the encapsulated appearance of her tumor and now we all have our paws crossed for good pathology news. DALPR have recently taken in several Dobes with complicated medical conditions and have come to SND for whatever assistance we can offer toward Sweet Georgia Brown’s veterinary costs. The rescues truly need our help to continue their mission of not only saving Dobes, but restoring them to health as well. June 30 , 2017:  Dear Si had his really complicated surgery and is recovering beautifully though that will be long and hard for a while!  Lucky for Si, he's had a wonderful stroke of luck and love...  Thanks to ALL involved in seeing to this marvelous Dude... GDR, his Fosters and of course, his donors!!  THANK YOU!!  Have a happy and well-deserved life dear one!! Hip, Hip Hooooooray!!
March, 2017:  I'd still call Si a baby at 1 year and 2 months, wouldn’t you? Still silly, goofy and all legs - at least on 3 good ones!  April 4th of LAST year, YES 2016, Si’s "owner" ran him over with a car. Let’s see, he would have been, what, just past weaned??? So, the guy runs him over, but, to give him credit, he did take him to a vet. That’s all the credit he deserves though since he did NO aftercare. He took the cast off way too soon and didn’t restrict activity at all. As a result, Si’s leg healed in a very deformed manner - the two inset pix below show his foreleg askew in what is his elbow and wrist - YES, his FOREarm - and the x-ray shows the extent of the deformities at the torqued elbow and bowed radius and ulna. His Poster Boy picture shows what the damage looks like in a whole-front shot.  When this miserable excuse for an 'owner' was told Si now needed surgery to correct the further damage he had caused by running him over in the first place, he decided to euthanize him. But no costly needle while they were still at the vet’s office, no, instead he took him home in order to shoot him. A horrified good Samaritan stepped in and saved Si… but eventually realized he couldn’t afford the corrective surgery required. Thankfully, he signed this poor little guy over to Georgia Doberman Rescue. Shelley and the GDR RescueAngels there are determined to get this little dude some surgery—and SND has joined them in their mission. Si is too young to have suffered so much at the hands of stupid, uncaring people, please consider helping him in any way you can. His corrective surgery will not be cheap, but it is his only chance short of outright amputation. May, 2017: Anyone who has been around Dobermans - even briefly - can immediately tell Hannah is an extraordinarily beautiful girl. Unfortunately, they can also tell dear Hannah, estimated to be only 4 years old, has been used as a breeding slave - having litter after litter until she was of no more use to her tormentors. Hannah was then dumped like trash in the already HOT Nevada desert without water, food or ceremony.  She likely wandered for at least several days when an Animal Control Officer picked her up, which, as it so happens, is perhaps the most fortuitous turn of events to come Hannah's way for a very long time. This compassionate ACO contacted the Getters, both RescueAngels from Doberman Rescue of Nevada, and Hannah won the canine lottery. John discovered two things about his new rescue immediately - one, Hannah was dumped in the desert from a completely different area of the country. Poor girl was covered in ticks, and ticks are not found in the deserts of Nevada. Secondly, Hannah has at least two troubling mammary tumors; her nipples hang down 2"-3" indicating either she had a recent litter or ominous medical issues. The first thing Hannah did was visit DRNV's capable veterinarian, who poked, prodded and filmed Hannah's chest - and again, Hannah's lucky number came up - her chest is clear! The plan now is for Hannah to have surgery after she partakes in some quality groceries and settles into a loving foster home. Hannah is so lucky; one does not even want to entertain what would have happened to this trusting, sweet and beautiful creature. Heartlessness is everywhere in this world, and knowing Hannah is safe and is loved is a reward all of us can celebrate. May, 2017:   Patton was a stray picked up by a South Carolina shelter. At 2-3 years old, he already tested positive for the dread heartworm (surprised?). Of course, that didn’t stop Doberman Underground from gathering him into their loving arms. Poor Patton was horribly emaciated, unneutered and heartworm positive - another day at the office for these dedicated saviors. However, although he is so young, his heartworm staging showed him to be stage 3, with a severe, continued cough. This requires a long, slow process to try to save him. Doberman Underground has brought him to Ohio and begun his extended journey to health—assuming it is not already too late! He has gained weight already and that’s a good sign! Doberman Underground has asked SND to help in this healing and we, in turn, are asking the Doberman community to also care about this poor boy. March, 2017:  Who doesn’t like to gaze upon a beautiful blue Sky?? Meet SND’s newest alumna to date, our very own beautiful Blue Sky! She was turned into the Angels at San Antonio Doberman Advocacy & Rescue by someone who said they’d found her as a stray a YEAR ago and then, after all of that time, relinquished her. Was she ever really a stray or was she just dumped? We’ll never know. But what we do know about Sky, is that she is heartworm positive. Luck actually befell this sweetheart when the RescueAngels of SADAR took her under their loving wings - otherwise, the heartworms definitely would have killed her. The SADAR angels will never abandon Sky but will be sure that she receives the truly life saving but very costly treatment that she needs in order to be rid of the heartworms and be well again. Only then can she move on to find her true forever home. Rescues take in so many Dobes with medical needs that stretch their funds to the limit, and SADAR is no different.  Therefore they’ve come to SND for assistance in paying for Sky’s treatment. March, 2017:  This sweet young DobeMiss is Lala. Her name is reminiscent of and it is not only lovely but apropos also - as Clapton said...” What do you do when you get lonely and nobody’s waiting by your side?” This sweetie hasn’t had anyone on her side for most of her short life. Most likely her life has been lonely since she left her brothers and sisters behind. Her family, and I use the term loosely, evidently never cared about her—or even looked at her, poor baby. No one knows what happened to her - only that it was at least last October. Perhaps it has been longer.  That's an estimate given by the vets who are fixing her up, getting her ready for life without loneliness. She was brought to the attention of animal control officers who ordered the owners to get her medical attention. This poor girl was in such painful shape, the neighbors tried to get her help. I know, I know… any of us would have done more, but we’re Dober-nuts. After multiple chances to comply, which were completely ignored, Lala was seized by animal control. Once she was finally released to rescue even more painful time had gone by—but all is well now. Lala is in the loving arms of RescueAngels in California. What had started out as a fracture of the right femoral neck had been left untreated for far too long. Now her best option is surgery to remove the head of the femur, allowing her body to form a soft tissue joint. Her prognosis is good. Following her surgery, she will need several months of healing but should have a normal, happy life. Layla is an amazing Dobe!   Not only does her face melt your heart, she has a disposition to match. She is dog and cat social and simply loves people. She is going to be the perfect girl for someone who can treasure her, as she deserves. Let’s show her all humans aren’t unspeakable wastes of oxygen! March, 2017:   When Oliver was 2 years old, his owner committed suicide. The mother of his child tried to keep Oliver but found nothing but breed discrimination. She had to leave the first rental because of Oliver.  At the second rental, the landlord took her money and then stipulated NO Doberman. Her Dalmatian was just fine, just no big, bad Doberman. At this point the young mother was very emotional about Oliver and struggling to deal with an 18-month-old child who can’t walk. She made the right decision and drove for 2 hours to get him to the Angels at Dobie Rescue of North Florida. This was a blessing in disguise for Oliver. When they met him, they realized he was an obvious cryptorchid. Further testing showed his vWd test at factor 25. Not good… but they arranged for frozen plasma and went ahead with his neuter. No plasma was needed, it turns out he is a carrier rather than a bleeder! After a very long day’s wait, Oliver’s special Angel, Judy was finally notified he came through just fine! He does have quite the Frankenstein look going right now. The poor boy’s undescended testicle was 6-8” up from his scrotum so it’s a long incision! Oliver was the class clown for the hospital staff during his stay. They say he is delightful - very good and friendly and exceptionally well behaved in his crate. It didn’t bother the staff at all when the doctor didn’t clear him for release until today! Now Judy can take him home and get him ready for another chance at life, one he richly deserves! March, 2017:   The handsome Gent your eyes are feasting upon is Jagger, a former ‘garage dog’! Yes!! This sweet, approximately 9 year old boy, lived in a cold, dank, automotive garage. And, when he was no longer useful to the good for less than nothing undeserving owner, Jagger was abandoned for 3 days without food or water. This was more than his already unhealthy, aged body could handle and caused Jagger to become immobile, which on a cold cement floor caused him unbearable pain. When a good Samaritan found Jagger, he was lying in his own excrement. The worried good Samaritan took Jagger to a veterinarian but soon realized Jag’s medical bills were more than he could afford. He continued to be Jagger’s guardian angel by calling Doberman Pinscher Rescue of Pennsylvania for help. The RescueAngels of DPRPA took Jagger under their wings to literally save his life. Upon his first visit to DPRPA’s vet, he was found to be severely underweight, starved actually, weighing only 62 lbs! He also has severe arthritis, especially in his spine, which causes him excruciating pain upon movement, and with the wrong move, Jagger could actually be paralyzed. As if this wasn’t enough on his senior body, Jagger was recently diagnosed with the dreaded killer, DCM. Jagger is now on medication for his DCM, arthritis and pain. He’s now a hospice boy and is in loving hands in the home of his foster parents. Jagger required costly testing for diagnoses and treatment, and DPRPA has come to SND for assistance in covering these unexpected medical bills. We at SND and on the café know how expensive it is to care for the all too many thrown-away Dobes that the rescues step up to save, so if you could, would you please donate toward Jagger’s care? March, 2017:  This stunning creature is Zero, a magnificent Doberman who was owned, cared for and trained by his family - but he suddenly found himself in a shelter. Thank the stars for California's Dobies and Little Paws Rescue who discovered Zero and immediately took him under their angel wings. Zero's rescuers learned that his former 'family' (term used loosely) didn't want to pay for surgery that would certainly save Zero's life. Apparently, these Neanderthals either were not aware or were in denial regarding the propensity for albinoid Dobermans to develop melanomas, which are malignant growths on the skin. Those of us who are fair skinned and grew up near the water are acutely aware of the dangers of overexposure to the sun. Poor Zero has dozens of small growths on his body - the excellent news is that his lungs are clear and he's a great candidate for surgery. The surgery will be expensive, however, because two surgeons will be used, to get as many of the growths as possible and to reduce the time under anesthesia. Zero is a beautiful boy, and after his surgery it's a given that he'll be adopted very soon after his recovery. Please consider donating to SND so Zero can have his surgery and not break the bank at DALPR. Dobies and Little Paws have had several recent cases which have been very expensive, and they cannot continue to help Dobes without your help! February, 2017:  Say hello and then a very sad goodbye to a beautiful Senior DobeLady... Nala.  Dumped at a shelter as an "over the counter" stray - likely by the same detritus that owned her in order to avoid paying a surrender fee.  Nala had a walnut-sized growth under her chin and a canteloupe-sized mammary mass that dragged the ground.  Beautifully cropped and docked, a sweet as honey Lady - she was on medical hold and would have been served at the Blue Cocktail Bar had not the RescueAngels from Doberman Rescue of Nevada taken her under their wings and to their vet - hoping that all of the signs of trouble would just be able to be resolved with surgeries.  They wanted to give her the life she deserved, one of love and caring and they had begun to do that.  Once her exam and then surgery began, it was quickly determined that Nala could not survive a very aggressive cancer which had already metastasized to her lungs and other organs.  As she was under anesthesia already, the VERY heartbreaking decision was made to take away the pain she would endure in a fight she could not win and make it their own.  DRNV knew this possibility was real but they gave her the chance to overcome... and then they let her go with dignity having known at least two days of love and a bully stick - that's Nala with one of the greatest gifts she enjoyed at the end of her life.  Thank you DRNV from the bottom of our hearts.  Please help us help DRNV recover from her loss and the financial burden that was a part of the effort to save her.  You can mail your donation or click on the Paypal button to the right (if using Paypal, please use the 'Send Money' link in your account and use the 'friends and family' tab if your account allows to your gift fee free!) February, 2017  The return of Mr. Rabbit!! Oh no!!! Refresh your memory of this charming Dude from October of last year and then feel the terror of an emergency bloat... again.  Yes, Senor Conejo's stomach was tacked with his first bloat emergency but the tacking only prevents torsion - torsion is a killer more often than not but bloating can still be a fatal problem.  Fortunately, the symptoms were recognized early and off to an emergency gastrotomy DLPR Angels went - no question as to whether he was worth it or not - they ALL are in the eyes of these DobeAngels!  DLPR has been hit mighty hard with expensive medical cases - in large part because they handle so many Dobermans at all times - Southern CA is a real pit of Dobermans finding themselves dumped or worse... what's worse? Languishing until the blue cocktail bar opens.  PLEASE help DLPR and SND help these ones, the helpless without your support!  THANK YOU!! 
October, 2016:  There is a sweet and funny red Dober Guy at Dobies and Little Paws Rescue in California that is looking for his forever home. His name is Conejo and he has been in rescue for a year - but there is a little problem preventing him from realizing his DobePotential! Unfortunately he bloated around last Saturday night, the 22nd. Of course, seems like these emergencies always happen on a weekend when regular vets are closed! So he had to be taken to an emergency clinic. He had a large midsection and excessive drooling along with unproductive vomiting, and it quickly (fortunately for him) determined that this was obviously bloat. It's a good thing Colleen knew what to look for indeed! Conejo was rescued from the Stockton Animal Shelter in Stockton June 2014. He came with his name, although he had been a stray, they think the shelter named him Conejo - that's Spanish for Rabbit - perhaps he was being a Silly Rabbit?? He has a great spirit and always brings smiles to everyone's faces with all of his antics and obvious joy with everyone he encounters. He is thought to be six years old and is still young enough to have a chance at a great life with a forever family. Due to the fact that Conejo had to be taken to the ER the cost for the bloat surgery is very expensive for our RescueAngels at Dobies and Little Paws who have experienced more than a few costly illness's and emergencies of late. UPDATE:   Day 7 post-surgery and tons of loving care... Dear Milo has progressed well enough to be discharged on Thursday, February 23!!  Our littlest darling is not out of the woods by any means and he has a long way to go before resuming the happy life and loving care he always deserved.  THANKS to ALL of you who have helped make Saving Milo a success so far!  He will need your help a while longer as he enters an arduous rehab program once he gets to Albuquerque.  Doberman Rescue of New Mexico... February, 2017:   This precious 3 1/2 month old baby is Milo, and already in his young life, he has a horrifying tale to tell. Milo was left in some type of business or shop (junkyard, maybe...?) and was assaulted and very nearly killed by the four resident - and intact - pit bulls. Beyond this being breathtakingly stupid on the part of his 'owner,' one has to wonder what the extent of neglect the unfortunate pit bulls are facing... a second grader would know better... Milo has two serious leg fractures - both femurs, right near the pelvis. Thankfully, someone got Milo to the emergency vet and was able to talk Milo's 'owner' into paying for his x-rays and consult. After dishing out the money for the visit, Milo's neanderthal owner stated he was done and walked away from this dear baby. Let's hope this Prince Charming doesn't or hasn't as yet reproduced himself. Dear Milo is now in the care of Trish of Doberman Rescue of New Mexico who stepped up to claim Milo after the compassionate vet reached out to rescues. We're told that Milo has an excellent chance of a full and complete recovery, and he's already had plates put on his fractures - before and after pix below tell the story. February, 2017 :  Sweet, little Maribeth is only 2 years old. She was picked up as a stray by a small-town animal control. Lucky for her, she was rescued by San Antonio Doberman Advocacy & Rescue. She was safe as soon as Margo and the SADAR RescueAngels got their loving hands on her! She was extremely thin and covered with bite marks. Just a poor scared baby… little and very weak. Shame on whoever created her, only to do that to her. It has taken 5 long weeks to get her spayed and strong enough for treatment for… drumroll please… her heartworm treatment to begin. Surprised? Given the life she came from, who would be? She has had to fight to live, she’s ready and willing to keep fighting but she can’t fight that damned worm alone. She’s a little girl but can, and will, put any dog in their place! Her days of being the underdog are over and, with your help, she can be the queen-bitch of some happy home for the rest of her days! February, 2017 :   Say hello to SND’s newest member! Darling Dee Dee is a two year young Dobergirl who just loves people! She also loves walks, hikes and frisbee throwing. So how does a great Doberman like this find herself dumped in a Texas shelter? The answer to that will remain unknown, but one thing we do know is Dee Dee is heartworm positive - certainly a testament to the kind of care she's had in her young life. Heart worm infestation is, without exception, always fatal and has an agonizing ending if not treated swiftly and properly. Luckily for Dee Dee, the RescueAngels of San Antonio Doberman Advocacy and Rescue have taken her under their wings and are going to provide the necessary treatment to rid Dee Dee’s heart of the deadly worms. Heartworm infestation is easily preventable but costly and time consuming to cure, not to mention the treatment is quite unpleasant for the victim. Let us band together to support SADAR in their journey to bringing Dee Dee back to health so she can continue loving life with a Forever Family that will cherish her! January, 2017 : We all cheered last June when it looked like this beautiful girl would regain her mobility.  Sadly, her early improvements were fairly short-lived.  Over the course of a few months, she struggled more and more to get up and she was moved to DALP's sanctuary so she could be an indoor dog, stay warm and get some more one on one attention. Everything was tried to get her mobile again including steroids, laser treatments, physical therapy, and water therapy. Nothing worked. X-rays revealed no broken bones, slipped discs, or any other cause for the paralysis in her back legs so it is presumed that she has nerve damage or a neurological disorder. She now has a wheelchair that fits her nicely but her long limbs get in the way and either drag or throw her off balance when they are pinned back in the chair. With her quality of life going downhill, we knew that the best option was a double amputation of those legs... These RescueAngels have done more than they can afford already and are asking for all of us to please HELP with the new surgery expense that will give this dear girl a better and happier life.  At first blush, this may seem an extreme solution but we have had other VERY successful cases where these Dobermans go on to very happy, unfettered lives and adapt very well.  Won't you please dig deep once again and help us bring this beautiful swallow back to the happy life she deserves? June, 2016: We are always amazed that someone could have a beautiful creature in their lives, give them a name that is breathtaking and demonstrates love... and then dump them at a city pound. Golondrina means swallow in Spanish; the birds that return to Capistrano in the Spring to delight all creatures. When beautiful Golondrina suddenly went down and couldn't walk, her owners waited 2-3 weeks and then unceremoniously dumped her at the Bakersfield CA pound, telling the intake workers she was about 2 years old. As awful as this was, Golondrina was soon discovered by the angels of Doberman Pinscher Rescue in Fillmore, CA and our spring swallow was scooped up into the loving arms of DPR, REA (Rescue Angels Extraordinaire). Initially, it was thought - due to her recorded age - that CVI (Wobbler's Disease) was not a possibility, but upon a visit to their wonderful vet, Dr. Rivera, her age was discovered to be more likely around 6, and lo and behold - she was diagnosed with Wobbler's. The good doctor gave Golondrina a course of IV steroid anti-inflammatory medications - and our beautiful swallow is standing and starting to haltingly walk!! She is now in DPR's loving care and she is improving every day. In the near future, Golondrina will receive cold laser treatment and acupuncture to improve and strengthen her. Doberman Pinscher Rescue in Fillmore has so many Dobes that have been cast off and need help. This remarkable rescue has saved more Dobermans than anyone can count, and it's raining Dobermans in CA. They have come to SND again for financial assistance with Golondrina's substantial veterinary bills, and we are ready to assist them in this noble and wonderful mission. January, 2017 :   Just look at this Doberkid’s precious face!! He’s been named Cozy (because that is just what he is and what he wants!!) and he is yet another victim of incomprehensibly uncaring owners. All we actually know about him is he was an unneutered stray who was most likely hit by a car. Was he dumped? Were his hormones telling him to seek out a girlfriend? Where did he come from? These are all questions that we will never have answers for and his "loving" owners never looked for him! What we can tell you is Cozy is approximately 2 years young and ended up in an animal shelter with a painfully swollen front leg.  Initial x-rays revealed a horrendously shattered humerus. It was at this point the RescueAngels of Dobies and Little Paws Rescue in California arranged a Pilots & Paws flight which zipped Cozy from the shelter and to DALP's very kind vet for, hopefully, a repair of his leg being the first order of business. Sadly, once in surgery it became obvious that the leg was irreparable and amputation became the only alternative. We can tell you that Cozy did very well and is recovering nicely as we publish.  DALPR has rescued several Dobes recently that have all needed costly medical intervention (See Golondrina above). January, 2017 :   Poor, sweet Patrick was abandoned in the desert. He’s about 2 years old, still a baby. He was very undernourished and covered with bites from other dogs - dogfighting cretins? feral dogs? Who can know?. When some good Samaritans stopped and opened their car door, he didn’t think twice! Just picture that butt tucking in to scoot right on in! Being friends of an adopter, they got him right to Doberman Rescue of Nevada. Patrick couldn’t be in better hands! RescueAngel John didn’t waste any time getting him treated and neutered! He’s a sweet, social boy and strongly ball-driven—a perfect candidate for Fly Ball competitions! Unfortunately, while healing from his neuter, he has developed a fast growing bump on his lip. There are signs the cells inside are ugly so it is being removed now. Hopefully they will be able to get clean margins with minimal scarring on his sweet face! Soon Patrick should be able to look forward to a forever home with an endless supply of tennis balls! January, 2017 :   This beautiful and lively girl was roaming the streets in California when local Animal Control picked her up. Because a few people had reported a "vicious" dog in the area, she was impounded at the local shelter. However, this kind shelter tested her for heartworm and discovered Karma was a high positive which is usually a death sentence for many - either because treatment is costly or the treatment itself kills the dog. The shelter contacted Ann at Dog Mountain Rescue (they are heroes to quadrupeds everywhere) and got Karma into Ann's life saving hands.  DMR saw to Karma's treatment and she is now heartworm free. And now the other shoe falls... sometime in her distant and sad past, Karma may have been hit by a car or had some other terrible misfortune. She has an odd gait and her leg is showing distinct evidence of serious injury - and it's becoming worse. Her back, also, shows evidence of injury, but that issue does not require any immediate treatment at this time. Karma loves, loves, LOVES to run with her pack mates at the rescue. Needless to say, with the worsening pain in her leg, she requires surgery to repair the damage. She'll probably have arthritis from her injuries as she becomes older... but don't we all? Please help us help DMR and Ann get this beautiful young lady the medical help she needs to keep on running and playing. Karma is just beginning her journey to a wonderful life and it truly is an honor to be part of that journey - just look at that gorgeous face! January, 2017 :   Allow me to introduce to you SND’s newest DoberDude. Say hello to (approximately) 3 year old Murdock, the latest Dobe saved by the RescueAngels of Dobies and Little Paws Rescue located in California.  Murdock was found with an injured leg after apparently being struck by a car and was taken to a local shelter by animal control. No one claimed Murdock, so as soon as he was able to be released to rescue, the awesome volunteers of Pilots and Paws made it their mission to deliver to Murdock to Dobies and Little Paws so his injuries could be treated ASAP. Unfortunately, the break was not a simple one, and extensive surgery with pins was required which will in turn make Murdock’s rehabilitation approximately 3 months long - but he gets to keep his life and his limb too! Murdock’s RescueAngels say he is very sweet, affectionate and well behaved and will make an amazing addition to his furever home once he is healed and healthy. As you can well imagine, treatment of this magnitude does not come cheaply (especially in California), and SND has been asked to help with Murdock’s vet bill. We all want to see this DD heal and begin a life full of love and happiness, the life he has always deserved. January, 2017 :   Five years ago Diablo and his brother, Rico, were bought as puppies by an elderly couple who have always lived with Dobermans. As the boys grew, their owners aged too and they became more and more frail. Finally, at ages 75 and 73, their movements confined by walkers, they became afraid of being accidentally injured by the boisterous pair. The couple’s adult children did the responsible thing and turned to Dog Mountain Rescue in Californis, putting them in the loving arms of RescueAngel Ann. They were both overweight, having been free-fed kibble from refrigerator drawers on the floor. Rico could run like the wind—but Diablo, not so much. He had a congenital knee problem which resulted in 2 TPLO's undertaken by this small rescue. The surgery was a success and Diablo now runs like any normal Dobe - but he has developed a worrisome lump on his side. It only started to appear a couple weeks ago but it is rapidly growing and needs to be removed and biopsied. Wow, the Angels of DMR could sure use some help financially as you can well imagine!
