Princess

Princess is a precious 3 1/2 year old Doberman in the custody of Treasured Angels of Georgia (TAG) Rescue. She had initially been rescued last summer when her owner became homeless and in August, was placed in what was believed to be a good home. On January 24, TAG received a call from Princess' new owners to pick her up because she had "suddenly become snippy with the little dogs". Princess' former foster mom picked her up the next day and was horrified to see the condition she was in! "She weighed about 10 pounds less than she did when she was adopted, walked like an 'old lady' and one of her rear legs was very swollen. She didn't even resemble the happy, playful 'wigglebutt' that was placed just 5 months ago!" After bringing her home, it was obvious that Princess was in pain. She refused to lie down and her foster mom was unable to make her comfortable. After finding a couple of drops of blood on the floor, TAG contacted SND to request assistance with funding to get her to the emergency vet, as they are currently very strapped for cash. Upon examination, the vet discovered that the swollen leg was only a by product of the real problem. Princess had a massive infection which had caused her mammary glands to abscess! Her tummy looked like a piece of raw meat! The swelling in the leg was also caused by the primary infection in her mammary glands. The vet prescribed Baytril, an antibiotic and two kinds of pain medication. Blood tests and cultures were taken and the results will be forwarded to the rescue's regular vet, Town and Country Vet Clinic in Marietta. As of this writing, the results are not back. It is expected that she will need to stay on antibiotics at least a month to fight the infection and after the infection is cleared up, surgery will probably be needed to remove the dead and damaged tissue from her abdomen! The ER vet estimated her recovery time to be at least 2 - 3 months.
