Kayla

Kayla is a 10 year old female Dobe living in PA with her family. This is the same family who owned Jasmine who SND helped in 2002 after Jasmine was involved in a freak fight with Kayla.

Kayla's owner reported, "On Wednesday Jan 19th Kayla got into a bag of parrot pellets, ate about 3 lbs and started to bloat. My husband and I rushed her to the vet and he took xrays which did not show any gas in her stomach, so he gave her a shot of Reglan and released her, with the warning to keep a close eye on her and bring her back in if any additional problems were noted. Our bill for that visit was $211, which we paid in full".

Unfortunately, the real trouble began when she let all the dogs out the following morning. Her Husky mix bumped into Kayla and a royal rumble broke out. Her husband (just having had surgery on his arm 3 days prior) was unable to assist in breaking up the fight and help did not come until a neighbor climbed the fence. Kayla was pronounced the loser with a vet bill totalling $1,345.64.

"Kayla sustained a laceration on the top of her head which needed 9 sutures, one on the side of her muzzle which required 6 sutures, a puncture/tear on her chin and one on her shoulder which both needed a few sutures, and a laceration on each of her rear legs which required sutures and drains. In addition, Kayla had a fatty deposit on her chest, which ruptured during the fight and had to be removed."

These folks are unable to absorb this bill, so are again asking SND for assistance. "After the time SND helped us out with Jasmine in October and November of 2002, we started a savings account for the purpose of unforeseen vet bills. We managed to pay the $1500 we owed when Jasmine bloated and subsequently had to be euthanized for cancer in August 2003. We would have had enough to pay for most of the vet care this time, except my husband broke his arm on January 13th, 2005 and had to have surgery on January 17, 2005. He does not have health insurance and the doctor and hospital would not perform the surgery without $1000 down as a deposit towards the cost. We are looking at medical bills in excess of $7000 for my husband's surgery. In addition, my husband missed work from January 14th through January 21, 2005 and because he is a subcontractor, he does not get vacation or sick pay."

The owner states that all dogs are now separated and crated. Once everyone is well again they will wear basket muzzles to prevent any further fighting. They have been trying to find a home for the Husky mix (who they originally took as a foster in December '03) but have not had luck in finding a quality home yet.
