Sarge

Sarge is an 8 year old B/T Dobe. He was adopted 3 years ago from the Humane Society by Nicky & Shane, volunteers for Gulf Coast Rescue. They also have a rescued Rhodesian Ridgeback and a multitude of farm animals (chickens, etc.) They are a foster home for GCDR.

Recently Sarge was limping so Nicky checked his leg for any obvious injuries, heat (infection), etc. Then a lump became evident on his leg. He was taken to the vet where x-rays revealed Osteosarcoma in his front leg. Chest x-rays were also taken- no mets at this time. Sarge has been given 6 weeks to live without amputation surgery. His future prognosis may be as short as 6 months to live. Time will tell with the nature of this aggressive form of cancer. The vet has recommended immediate amputation.

They have already paid the $208 for today's workup (exam, x-rays, etc.) Their household bills make paying for this surgery a definite burden. Sarge is Nicky's baby. She is very distraught over his diagnosis but wants to do everything she can to prolong his life as long as she can be assured it will be a quality, pain free life. Chemotherapy will most likely not be used in the future, but the owner will keep that option open and may discuss it with the vet. Again, quality and pain free are her main goals for Sarge.

Updates:

February 22, 2005 - Sarge is at the Bridge.
We sadly report that although the amputation was able to buy Sarge some quality time with the family who loved him, it was unable to save his life. We extend our deepest condolences to Sarge's family.
