Roscoe!
Roscoe is an adorable SEVEN WEEK old black and tan puppy living with his family in New Orleans. Roscoe has been diagnosed with Parvo, a very dangerous virus. He is the new darling of Jessica, the 15 year old daughter. The family unwittingly bought him from a back yard breeder one week ago, and noticed he wasn't 'acting like a puppy'. They took Roscoe to a vet for a checkup and routine shots this past Tuesday, January 13th. When poor Roscoe started having bloody diarrhea, throwing up, and still acting sick, the original vet said that it was just a dietary issue and to change him to Puppy Chow. No, that wasn't very good medical care. The family then went to see another vet, who diagnosed the Parvo. They have spent $300 so far at the two vets, and needed help to save this puppy's life.
We spoke with the mother Friday morning, and instructed her to get Roscoe to a good vet IMMEDIATELY! Fortunately, we have worked with the good folks at the Magazine Street Animal Clinic in New Orleans on other SND cases. Roscoe has been under observation and isolation since this morning, and is receiving fluids and the proper medication for this deadly virus. The next day or two is crucial, seven weeks is obviously too young to handle such an infection. We will update this page as we get news of his progress. SND has obligated funds from its General Fund to help start Roscoe's treatment.
In the meantime, the back yard breeder has abandoned the family in terms of caring for this sick puppy they sold them. We have talked to the family about NOT going back there, and to consider adopting in the future. We have also learned that there are NO laws in Louisiana concerning how old a puppy must be before it can be sold.
We urge everyone to read up on Parvo! Here are two pages from Veterinarypartner.com: What is Parvo?, Parvo: the Physical Illness and its Treatment. If you use the search line near the top of the page and put in Parvo, you will see several other articles on the disease. This virus is not to be messed with, it is very fatal and highly contagious!
