Pinkie

Pinkie is approximately 1 year old. Sbe was released to DAR&E from the Loudoun County Animal Shelter at the end of June 2004. She had been found as a stray and had stayed at the shelter for approximately 6 weeks. She was diagnosed to have demodectic mange and was being treated with daily ivermectin, antibiotics, and bathing. During her stay at the shelter, she progressed to the point of having almost no fur at all. Due to her continued deterioration, the shelter contacted DAR&E. She was placed in a foster home for continued therapy.

Pinkie has a severe case of generalized demodectic mange. Upon arrival to her foster home and a visit to DAR&E's rescue vet, her medication regimen was changed to Mitaban dips every 2 weeks, a change in antibiotics, and nutritional supplements. Her initial improvement was dramatic, with almost all of her coat returning. However, she has since had 2 major relapses and was not responding to the dip therapy. As a result, she is now on DAILY Interceptor treatment as well as the antibiotic Baytril. The daily cost of these 2 medications is $10/day, and she must stay on this regimen for approximately 6 weeks. There is a possibility of future relapses.
