Dobes helped from April to June, 2003

Thanks for taking a moment to read about some of the Doberman lives SND has been fortunate enough to help. The links below will take you to the pages that contain pictures and stories about our SNDobes. The stories have been split up into separate pages to make them easy to download (that's good, it means we have helped lots of Dobes!). Please remember to read our Currently In Need page for Dobes that need help now (there are Dobes there that will come to this list when we're done helping them).

Ryker!
June, 2003

Ryker was a handsome, young, 1-1/2 year old Dobie in the care of DRG (Doberman Rescue Oklahoma). He was found wandering the streets in the Tulsa area. He was both obedience and house trained, and was quite a love. After being adopted, he suddenly became unresponsive and trembled constantly. He was returned to rescue and taken to the vet. It was discovered that this young Doberman's heart was not sending out electrical impulses properly, and he needed a pace maker! You can see more pictures of Ryker and read more about him on Ryker's Page.

We are deeply saddened to let you know that Ryker has passed away. Please consider mailing in a donation, or using the PayPal button below to make a donation in his memory so that other Dobes may live. We greatly appreciate any contributions in memory of this fine young Doberman, and extend our most sincere sympathies to Marcia, Jamie, and the rest of the DRG group. Thank you for loving him and caring for him to the end of his days.

Ruby the Pup!
June, 2003

Ruby is a beautiful 7.5 week old red Doberman pup in Virginia. She injured her leg on a holiday weekend and her owner could not afford the emergency clinic. SND helped with the emergency treatment for Ruby's leg. You can visit Ruby the Pup's page to learn more about this adorable little lady.

Flame!
June, 2003
Flame is a 4 year old red Dobergirl in GA. She was dumped after her "parents" got a divorce! After going into foster care, her foster mom noticed that she was having pain in her back legs. The initial diagnosis was hip dysplasia, but further diagnostics revealed Wobblers! You can visit Flame's page to learn more about her. We raised money so that Flame could have the gold bead implants that she needed to insure a pain-free life for her! Flame has now had her surgery and is slowly making progress with the help of her implants.

Spike!
June, 2003
Spike is a 7 1/2 year old male Doberman who lives with the Petrys family, and their other rescue Dobe, Red in Florida. One day Spike was fine, and the next day he was lifting his leg to urinate, but nothing came out. He was taken to the vet and x-rays revealed that he had bladder stones. Emergency surgery was necessary if Spike was to have any chance! Spike has now recovered, and is enjoying life with his family and Red. Please visit Spikes's Page for more details and pictures.

Xavier
May, 2003

Xavier is an old friend to SND supporters. We met him last year, when he was adopted by a wonderful retired couple in Tallahassee, FL. Xavier is now 12 years old, and was recently discovered to have four tumors. One was on his lower eye lid, one the size of a pea on the right side of his nose, one on the right hock which bothered him when he lay down and the one that worried Dr. Hall the most was the ulceration on his chin. SND assisted Xavier's family in having the tumors removed, so that this fine Dobergent can enjoy his golden years with his new-found family.

August 17, 2003 - SND is saddended to tell you that Xavier has gone to the Bridge. Please consider making a donation in his memory so that other dobes may be helped.

Sara
May, 2003

Sara is a beautiful 4 month old puppy, living with Nichole and her 2 children in Brampton, Canada. Sara had been diagnosed with glaucoma in her right eye, due to the carelessness of her breeder! The condition caused blindness in the eye, and also caused her a great the pressure that was causing the poor pup to be in pain! You can visit Sara's page to learn more about her. SND teamed with IMOM's Blind Dog Fund to raise funds for Sara's surgery. She underwent the operation and is now living happily with her family.

Annie
May, 2003

Annie is approximately five years old and lives in Chicago with her foster parents. She was diagnosed with Wobblers syndrome. Wobblers is caused by a narrowing or malformation of the spinal cervical (neck) vertebrae which causes pressure on the spinal cord. This painful disease gets progressively worse if it is left untreated. A specialist Annie has seen estimated that she would be paralyzed in six months if not treated. Annie was scheduled to have Gold Bead Implantation, a course of treatment that has shown great results for Wobblers. SND raised money to help with Annie's surgery and recovery. She is a loving and playful Dobe at heart, and is responding well to the implants and well on her way to recovery! We invite you to visit Annie's Page for more details and pictures.

Apollo
May, 2003

Apollo is a sweet, goofy, 4 year old black and tan, natural eared Dobe. He was in foster care with Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue when SND was contacted. He was heartworm positive, and had a clotting disorder, with possibly more complications. GCDR requested assistance with testing for Apollo, so that his problems could be correctly diagnosed and a proper course of treatment rendered. You can learn more about Apollo by visiting Apollo's Page. Special Needs Dobermans is happy to report that Apollo is just fine, now, and has been adopted by a loving family.

Lacey
April, 2003

SND was contacted by our friends at Doberman Rescue of Colorado. They needed some assistance with a new rescue case of theirs. Lacey is a 3-4 year old girl that was recued form the Pueblo, CO shelter. While awaiting placement she ate something in the back yard and had to go in for emergency surgery in the middle of the night. The vet found that part of her intestine had collapsed. The operation was successful. The vet reduced the bill to $500 (from $700 - $800) but DRCO is still short. SND stepped forward with $250 thanks to its donating members and covered the rest of the bill. We're very happy to report that the surgery was a success and Lacey's life was saved! Hats off to the Colorado folks for taking such good care of this adorable girl!

June
April, 2003

Our friends at Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue introduced us to June, a ten year young red Dobie. It was first thought that June had Blastomycosis, an nasty fungal infection found in dogs, people, and occasionally cats. As if this weren't enough, it turned out that June had liver cancer as well. This was found during emergency exploratory surgery after she 'crashed' one night. It was determined by the attending doctors and her friends at GCDR that her quality of life would be greatly compromised by the liver cancer. She was humanely let go, though she didn't lack for love and caring. We're saddened by her loss, but glad GCDR came to SND for help with the initial Blasto tests.

Rupert
April, 2003

This handsome boy is 10 years young and makes his home with SND member Ceilidh Campbell in Washington State. Not long ago, Rupert started dropping weight rapidly, going from his strapping 67 pounds to 53 pounds in very short order. As you can tell from his picture, he is a fit and trim guy to begin with. Several tests were run and finally an x-ray revealed a life threatening blockage in his intestines. Thanks to expert medical care, the blockage was removed. At the same time, the doctors removed a cancerous growth from his let - it was benign (phew!). He is on a special diet now as his intestines recover and he is gaining back some of his lost weight.

Dion
April, 2003

Dion is beautiful, black/rust, 18-24 month old male Dobie. He came into DAR&E as a stray, very skinny and extremely unsteady on his feet. With time and TLC Dion has put on weight and regained most of his balance. He continues to have physical problems though. Dion has several issues: he’s been diagnosed with Dancing Doberman Disease. This causes his hind legs to dance about, seemingly uncontrollably, when he stands still. There is typically supposed to be no pain associated with DDD, just a problem with the neurological communication to the hind legs. Dion, unfortunately, also has a problem with his front end. He can’t stretch out and run like other dogs. His front legs, particularly his front right leg, will only go so far forward, causing Dion to lurch when he tries to run and play. The worse part is that whatever is causing this problem is also causing Dion pain. You can see it in his movement as he limps back to the house by himself, before the daily walk with the dogs is actually over. Dion has gone through a number of extensive tests in an attempt to find the cause of this debilitating problem. His foster parents have taken care of him with love and devotion - if love alone could cure Dion, he'd be the most healthy Dobe around. SND was all to glad to help raise funds for his tests. He continues to have difficulty moving without pain. We want nothing but the best for this adorable boy.
