Moose

Moose is a 2-3 year black and tan neutered male Doberman in the care of Doberman Rescue Group of Oklahoma. This goofy cross-eyed boy is in a foster home that he shares with cats and dogs (of varying breeds and sexes). He gets along with all of his foster siblings. Moose’s favorite thing to do is lay across the couch until in a surge of energy he dashes across the room, into the kitchen, and BACK on the sofa. Moose also likes to choose a favorite spot in the back yard and dig, dig, dig! Moose is friendly to all who meet him, although little puppies scare him.

Tuesday morning Moose’s foster mom (Andrea) put him outside to potty while she finished getting ready for work. After about 10 minutes or so she opened the door to get him back in the house – no Moose. She called him – no Moose. She went out in the yard to get him, and saw that the bamboo screen that was in front of her fence wasn’t secured any more, and saw Moose in the neighbor’s yard with his leg being chewed by the unaltered male pit bull terrier.

We can’t know how it happened since no one was out with him, but it appears that Moose got behind the bamboo screen and stood up with his front legs on top of the chain link fence, and the pit bull grabbed him by the leg and dragged him over the fence. The top of the fence was crushed when Moose’s foster mom got out there.

Andrea SCREAMED for the neighbors to come help, and they called/pulled the pit bull off. She climbed over the fence and comforted Moose. He tried to walk back to his yard, but his right front leg was dangling uselessly. Andrea carried him back over the fence, into her yard and into her house, and called DRG. Since their rescue vet was out of town, he was taken to Andrea’s vet (which is the closest vet to her home, within a half mile). They decided to amputate his leg at the elbow because it was crushed. They had to clean up and stitch multiple lacerations to his neck.

Moose is still recuperating at the vet clinic in Tulsa.
