Ivy

Ivy is an 8 year old blue Dobe adopted two years ago from Doberman Assistance Rescue and Education (DAR&E).
Ivy has had several episodes of neck pain and stiffness over the years. Until recently the vet
chalked it up to old age and / or arthritis. Then a couple of weeks ago, Ivy had a major episode -
with severe pain and couldn't move. The vet referred them to a neurologist, who identified Ivy's
problem as a herniated cervical disk that could be surgically repaired. The neurologist said that Ivy
probably had been experiencing constant pain.
Due to the severe pain it was clear that Ivy's quality of life was suffering. Shortly after SND was
contacted, it became necessary for the surgery to be scheduled right away so Ivy went in for surgery
last week. The Dr removed "a ton of material" from around her spinal cord. She came home on Thursday
and is healing nicely at home. She is able to walk, and her post surgical swelling is reducing. She
is scheduled to have the staples removed on Tuesday.
The surgery was $3,700, the MRI was $1,200 and the presurgical blood work and consult was $350.
$5,250 in total. SND has been asked to provide whatever level of assistance we can -- this expense is
beyond the ability of Ivy's owners to handle by themselves -- However, as Ivy's "mom" wrote "My husband
and I love Ivy SO much, and can't imagine allowing her to live with this kind of pain."
