Say Hi to Hope!

Help Hope!

Hope was brought to our attention by SND member Mary Lynn Bushong. She saw this poor girl's story on Doberworld and contacted Teri Dugan who is caring for Hope. Additional pictures and updates are found below. Teri has set up a web page for Hope, and you can email her if you want to inquire about Hope directly. Here is Hope's story as told by our Mary Lynn:

10/09/02: "Some of you are on Doberworld and saw Teri Dugan's posting about an older girl with a broken leg, who she helped rescue. Hope was abandoned and some point shortly before she was found, her hind leg was broken. A woman found her and had her leg splinted at her vets and then she contacted Teri. Teri took Hope home and started caring for her. She took her into her vet yesterday afternoon to be evaluated and to get an estimate on what it would cost to fix the leg and get her back on her feet. Including all fluids, surgery to put external pins and a plate on the broken leg, blood testing and heart worm testing, plus keeping her for several days to make sure she was doing well, they estimated $500-550. The vet thought that her age was probably closer to 8-10 years. She was heart worm free, and though her kidney values were a little high on the blood test, he thought it was probably a result of dehydration. He put her on fluids to help flush her system. She was also under weight but not severely. In all he thought her prognosis for a full recovery was excellent."

Please do what you can to help this poor girl! We are asking for monetary donations, auction items, and any other assistance you can offer. If you would like to make a donation towards Hope's recovery, you can use the PayPal buttons on this page, or you can mail us a donation. Also remember to check our Current Auctions page to see items we're auctioning off on eBay to raise money for Hope and our other Dobes with special needs. As always, no donation is too small! Please oh please don't sit on five dollars because you think it is too small, it isn't! Thank you!

Updates

10/10/02: From Mary Lynn - "I received that information this morning and passed it on the controller group when it was voted on and approved. The vet came in this evening (on his day off) and did the surgery. I just got a report on it. It went better than he thought it would and he expects her to be up and walking tomorrow. They are planning to keep her at the clinic until next Monday to make sure all systems are go with her. She will continue to receive fluids tomorrow as she has since yesterday, and tomorrow evening he'll retest her kidney values. He used only the Isoflorene (sp?) gas to take her down with to minimize the effects on her organs, esp. liver and kidneys. He said she has already wakened and is doing well. There was one little spot of darkened skin on the leg which the vet is watching. He thinks it is possibly the point of impact for the break. Using the pins and external plate reduced trauma to the site and allows him to treat the place more effectively. He did another set of x-rays after he was done and everything looked good. He did say that it was her good leg which had been broken and there is some arthritis showing up in the other leg."

"Teri wanted you all to know how much she appreciates all of us in this group, for jumping in and helping this old girl. When she told the other woman we were helping, she cried tears of joy. Teri isn't part of a rescue group but is planning on taking Hope home for rehab until a new home can be found for her. We'll try and keep everyone up to date on her, but keep her in mind if you are looking for an older girl to fill a place in your heart." Thank YOU Mary Lynn!

April 18, 2003 Final Update - Hope is home!
Here is Mary Lynn's happy update! "Hi all, I had a nice note from Teri Dugan last evening. As some of you may remember, we helped her with a rescue she made last fall. Hope is an older girl who was found amoungst some dumped garbage, and she had a broken leg. Teri took her in and was willing to foster her and we helped pay for the treatment. Hope has recovered and since she seemed so happy there, Teri has decided to keep her and make sure she has a secure home now. So, another lost and injured senior dobergirl has a home where she can be loved and cared for."

June 7th, 2003 - We are very saddened to report that Hope has passed away. Please read Teri's fond tribute to this wonderful Doberman.
