Elizabeth

Elizabeth is a sweet, adorable 11 year old Doberman owned by SND member Sheilla, in Georgia.
She shares her home with 4 other dogs, mostly rescues and one kitty cat. She also currently has 2 foster
brothers and a foster sister. She has been
battling a mystery illness since November 2004, and her "mom" has run out of money to provide the future treatment
and diagnostics that she needs. Here is Elizabeth's story in her mom's words:
"Elizabeth came to live with me about a year and a half ago after she was taken by Animal Control in a neglect
case. She and two small dogs had lived for the last several years in an old dirt floor basement, wading in their
own feces and urine. Elizabeth was heartworm positive when she was rescued, but did very well with her heartworm
treatment. She also easily transitioned to living in the house and became house trained in little or no time. She
soon became the matriarch of the family, known as Queen Elizabeth. She is very sweet and gentle and good
with all other dogs, large and small. She even loves kitties and has never met a stranger. She nudges just
about everyone she meets for petting!
Last November, Elizabeth suddenly became ill one night. When I woke up in the morning, she was burning up
with fever and had urinated and defectated on the bed - something she would never ordinarly do. She was bascially
unresponsive, but breathing. I thought she'd had a stroke! I rushed her to the vet where she was placed on IV
fluids and given antibiotics. A full blood panel was done, but the tests revealed nothing. Within 2 days, she seemed like she was back to her happy, go lucky self.
Everything seemed fine until mid-February, when the same thing happened again. Again the test revealed
nothing but she responded to treatment
and quickly became herself again. She was placed on 1500 mg of amoxicillin for 30 days and just completed
the prescription last week.
Then on evening of March 28/moring of March 29, I woke up about 3:30 in the morning. Elizabeth was burning up, and all the other dogs had gotten
out of the bed and were on the floor. I turned on the lights and saw that Elizabeth had urinated and defectated
on the bed again. I took her temperature and it was 104.6. I rushed her to the emergency vet where she was
quickly placed on fluids and antibiotics. When business hours rolled around, she was taken to her regular vet,
Dr. Susan Llewallyn at Town and Country Vet Clinic, where she remained on fluids and antibiotics and more tests
were run, including an ultrasound. Still no clue as to the reason for her illness. As of this writing, the
afternoon of March 30, she is still hopitalized. She has shown some improvement, but still has a long way to
go. She has an appointment with an Internal Medicine Specialist on Friday, April 1."
