Eeyore

On March 1, SND was contacted by Kathleen Price, an independent rescuer
in Longwood, FL, requesting assistance for Eeyore, a Doberman that she
recently rescued. Here is Eeyore's story...
Eeyore wound up in Seminole Valley AC near the end of January. She had
been picked up as a stray. When Katleen went to the shelter to
evaluate her, she was horrified at her condition. She had generalized
demodectic mange, ear infections, eye infections, a broken toe, a good
20 lbs. underweight and close to delivering a litter. She looked on the
outside like a dog of 10 who had been used and abused but a look at her
teeth revealed a young dog. Unfortunately, on her last day of stray
time, she was claimed by her owners, who seemed oblivious to her
condition, outside of the fact that she was pregnant.
Fortunately for Eeyore, Kathleen was able to find out where her owners
lived, and she would drive by to check on her, and called in reports of
an animal in distress. Unfortunately, nothing came of this, so finally,
Kathleen left a note in the mail box of Eeyore's owners, asking them to
call her. The next day, they did. Eeyore had started having puppies
in the night and had already killed one and tried to kill the 2nd. They
wanted her to come get the dog. When Kathleen got there she knew
Eeyore was in trouble. The one live pup was very cold as they had taken
it away from her and put it in the shed. Eeyore was burning up with
fever. The drive with Eeyore in labor to the vet clinic was horrendous.
She screamed the entire time, as Kathleen tried to reassure her.
When they got to the clinic Eeyore had a fever of 106.8. The pup was
immediately taken from Kathleen and they started trying to get her
warm. X-rays showed 3 more pups in Eeyore's belly. Eeyore pretty much
passed out at that point. She had a team of 2 doctors, 3 vet techs, the
office manager and Kathleen working on her. She was started on fluids
to get her body temp down. It took 3 injections of oxytocin to get her
weak body to deliver the remaining pups. The last thing she needed was
to undergo surgery. The first 2 pups were stillborn but the 3rd was
a little bit alive. They revived her and she has now passed her 2 week
birthday. She is being handraised by the office manager. They estimated
that this was Eeyore's 4th litter at only two years of age.
Eeyore is now with Kathleen, and undergoing treatment for Demodex. She
has improved substantially, and was spayed today. Kathleen has
requested help with the bill for Eeyore's emergency care and Demodex
treatment, as she has several senior dogs that have also had
emergencies lately, and there aren't enough funds to pay Eeyore's
bill.
