Doby

Doby is a 5 - 6 year old Doberman with a sad tale to tell. Back in the spring, he was abandoned by his owners, in Swansea, SC, and left tied in their yard after they moved. Some neighborhood children felt sorry for him and untied him, and he wound up finding the home of a kind woman who took him in. The woman was undergoing a difficult period in her life, and although she quickly came to love Doby, she was not in a position to provide the care and supervision that he needed.

She came to SND for help after Doby had escaped her yard and was attacked, presumably by a Pit Bull. His wounds were severe, and she had no money for his vet care. We contacted his vet, Dr. Amy Spies, who told us that this was the third time that she had treated Doby for severe bite wounds. This time they were so bad she almost lost him, and she feared he would not survive another attack!

Dr. Spies went on to say that Doby was probably the sweetest Doberman that she had ever met! She told us that ordinarily she would use anesthesia when treating wounds this severe, (drains had to be inserted, wounds kept clean, dressed, etc), but because Doby is heartworm positive, she felt that use of anesthesia would threaten his life, and she could not take the chance. Throughout his ordeal, Doby was sweet, gentle, and patient with his care takers, never once offering to snap or growl, as they treated his injuries. Dr. Spies said, "I know we had to hurt him, but never once did he try to lash out at me or my staff. He is the sweetest Dobe." It was decided that it was best for Doby for him to go into rescue. His owner tearfully agreed, and CASA, a rescue group in GA, agreed to take the boy in. He will be released on December 27, and will join his new foster mom at that time. Doby leaves behind a large vet bill with Dr. Spies, who was kind enough to take him in and treat him when she was uncertain as to when/if she would be paid. She also went the extra mile in working to get Doby into rescue and heavily discounting the bill. (At the time of his release, Doby will have been hospitalized for nearly one month!) CASA is a small rescue group that has taken in a number of dogs with medical problems recently. They have requested assistance with Doby's continued treatment, so that he can be healed and re-homed into a loving family, and live the life that a sweet Doberboy was meant to have. If you would like to help with the outstanding bill with Dr. Spies, or Doby's ongoing treatment, you can mail us a donation or use the PayPal button below to make a tax-deductible donation for Doby. This sweet boy deserves all the help that you can send his way!
