Meet Mr. Cody!!

What a handsome DobeKid!! Too much tumult in such a young life!

I have all the love I need now - bring on the groceries!!

Cody is a survivor. This young boy was found wandering the streets by an animal control officer who was amazed that he was cheerful and friendly. He was so skinny from long starvation that his spine protruded. He had been so malnourished for so long that his ears had lost all their hair, his back was nearly bare and his desire to nuzzle caused his few remaining whiskers to simply break off. In other words, he was a mess. But, he seemed so happy to just get some human attention.

The people at the shelter said he broke their hearts. He was a very nice dog, but in such bad shape they just knew no one would adopt him. Lucky for him, he came to the attention of Doberman Rescue of Nevada in Las Vegas and they took him in. He was so happy, but they just knew it would take forever to find someone who could love this bedraggled-but-happy dog. They began giving him what was probably best food he had enjoyed in months. They checked him out, nose to tail, expecting the worst. Remarkably, he was just fine. No disease. No mange. No heartworms. He looked awful because he was starving, but that was it.

Within a few days, another miracle happened for this happy youngster. A retired couple who have enjoyed show Dobermans all their lives were looking for a rescue dog. A puppy would not do for their age and they could not afford an expensive show dog, but a Doberman was all they would consider. Expecting nothing to come of it because he still looked so bad, DRNV volunteers introduced them to the skinny and starved dog with hairless natural ears and a full tail. He was nice, but why would they want him? After all, these people had show dogs for years. They knew the breed standard. But, within a minute of meeting, they knew they had found their new dog. “Come here, Cody,” they said. He came, crawled into their laps and hearts and went home. Then within days, his bad luck seemed to return.

A mild cough quickly became a gut-wrenching hacking wheeze. Within hours, the once- happy dog could hardly stand and struggled to breathe. Rushed to the clinic, Cody spent the next week in intensive care fighting to live from what his veterinarian described as one of the worst cases of pneumonia he had ever seen. His X-rays showed literally no area of his lungs that was not congested. He was loaded up with antibiotics as he stayed in isolation, breathing with a nebulizer to get medication into his lungs and surviving with an IV for fluid and nourishment. It was touch and go for several days and he nearly lost the fight to live. But, he never lost his will to live. His new family visited every day, worried about him, and worried about how they would pay what they knew would be a big bill. But, as any Doberman lover can understand, they did not hesitate to do all possible to save him. It was nearly ten days later that Cody was finally well enough to go home. But, while his successful fight to live was heart-warming, the costs were heart and wallet-wrenching. His family is retired and living on a fixed income. Saving Cody was, for them a financial disaster.

Their love for this very special young boy is inspirational. Please help any way you can to support Cody’s care and recovery.
