Ceili was a happy, healthy dobe girlie (and top Schutzhund prospect!) until
one June morning when an episode of vomiting tipped Laura off to the fact that
something was seriously wrong. By evening it appeared Ceili couldn’t even
keep water down, and she grew increasingly lethargic as the night went on. Early
the following morning Ceili was taken to the vet, where x-rays revealed an intestinal
obstruction. Emergency surgery was Ceili’s only chance for survival. Ten
feet of Ceili’s intestine was subsequently removed due to tissue necrosis
resulting from the blockage.
Ceili was sent home to recover following her surgery but, sadly, disaster struck a second time. She was rushed back to the vet for a second emergency surgery whereby more necrotic tissue was removed, and a new cecum was constructed. Fecal matter that had spilled from the damaged intestines was removed. From then on Laura could only hope that the newly constructed intestines would hold together; otherwise the whole ordeal could start again… for the third time!
Ceili continues to be monitored for infection and other complications by the veterinary staff. Excessive drainage from Ceili’s wound resulted in more testing, driving the cost to save Ceili even higher. As long as Ceili continues to fight to stay alive, Laura is determined to do whatever it takes to help her beautiful girl.
