Blitzen!

Blitzen is a one year old black/tan male Doberman with natural ears that was rescued by the Dean family in SC. This young Doberboy has become an integral part of the family which includes two daughters and a cat. Recently, while they were walking him on a leash, he backed up, got out of the collar and was hit by a car. Blitzen's bills so far have come to about $3,400 for the emergency treatment, surgery, boarding during recovery. The Deans have been able to handle most of those bills, but have come to SND for help for the remaining bills (approx $450) and the future rehabilitation bills (unknown at this point) as they pursue treatment for Blitzen. Additionally, the Deans have installed a new fence so Blitzen will have a safe secure back yard (their old fence was not "puppy proof") so finances are REALLY stretched.

We have also learned that the Dean family's collective heart is very big. One of the daughters found Blitzen roaming around loose on a college campus last December. They contacted Doberman Rescue of North Carolina to find out how to best handle the situation. Notices were put up and DRNC began working on finding foster space for Blitzen. The prior owners did not come forward, and DRNC was going to list Blitzen in their program. During this time though, as Dobes have a way of doing, the Deans had become very attached to this boy and had decided to keep him. At the same time, this unfortunate accident occurred. Being a very responsible family, they immediately spent $3,000 to put up a good fence around a half acre of their backyard. We applaud them for helping Blitzen when he was homeless, taking care of him now in his greatest time of need, and for securing his safe future by putting up a better fence. We definitely need more people like this!

Blitzen's visit on March 18 to Upstate Veterinary Specialists yielded this additional news, as told by his folks: It appears that Blitz has complications from his hip injury. They want to take additional X-rays which will require that he be put under anesthesia. Also, additional surgery is possible. There is no guarantee that surgery will be totally effective. Injuries of this nature can cause the large bone of the thigh to rub against the remaining pelvis structure. He is carrying his back leg instead of using it. As he was recovering, we noticed that he started using his back leg, but recently he has been carrying it instead of putting weight on it. The vet prescribed pain medication and set up an appointment for two weeks from now.

We are hoping for the best and will pass along additional updates as we receive them. SND has stepped in to assist with Blitzen's mounting bills - additional surgery will push them well past $4,500. We need your help too! Please consider making a tax deductible donation which can be sent to us by mail, or you can use the PayPal button below to make a donation online. This wonderful boy needs to get back to being happy and loved with his new family! Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
