Adonis

Adonis is a handsome 2 year old male Doberman, adopted by Mary and family from Second Chance Dobes in
MI, 14 months ago. He shares his home with Mary, her son, 2 kitties and a mixed breed dog named Cocoa.
Mary says that he is intelligent, and head strong, but very gentle and loving as are most Dobes that
we know and love.
Last Friday, Adonis became very ill and was rushed to MSU. Here is Mary’s account of what happened:
“We need help. Last night I rushed my baby boy to Michigan State for blood transfusions. He had low
red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. He almost died. We don't know why, yet. Just for
the emergency service, and transfusions the bill came to almost a thousand dollars. I had to pay up
front. It was all I could afford. I could not afford a bone marrow aspirate, abdominal ultrasound,
tick titers, and other diagnostic work up to find out what caused such a devastating result to Adonis'
immune system. Let me print what the vet at MSU put in my discharge notes. "It is very important to
realize that this course of treatment(2 antibiotics, and prednisone) in the absence of a diagnosis can
be detrimental to Adonis' overall well being. Ideally, Adonis should have a complete work up:cbc, chem
profile, urinalysis, tick titers, chest x rays, abdominal ultrasound, and a bone marrow aspirate and
biopsy. Due to financial constraints, this workup was declined. We cannot make an accurate assessment
of his prognosis without a diagnosis or appropriate work up. It is very important to understand that
Adonis may require multiple blood transfusions while waiting for the meds to be effective, or more
importantly, his bone marrow may never recover from the initial insult. Adonis is a beautiful and very
sweet dog. We wish him the best of luck." And we were sent out the door. Payments are not allowed. I
don't want this boy to die because he was unlucky enough to be adopted by a poor owner. Can anyone
help? I would give Adonis up to anyone that could provide the medical care that he needs. I love him
so very much, this is breaking my heart. I would do anything for Adonis to have another chance. He is
not even 3 years old yet. Any help would be appreciated. I can make monthly payments if anyone knows
a vet that can help .“
Fortunately, Second Chance’s vet, Dr. Karen, is willing to work with Mary and SND. She saw Adonis
on Monday and began the work up which includes MSU’s recommendations. She has given us a very substantial
discount on all of these tests.
Later on in the week, Adonis needed a second blood transfusion. We are still awaiting all of the test
results, but it looks like Adonis will have a long hard road to travel to regain his health.

Updates:
January 16, 2004 - Adonis is at the Bridge
We received very sad news via Second Chance Dobes that Adonis was having a rough time. While wating
for all of the test results to come back, Adonis had to have still more transfusions. Dogs from Second
Chance donated blood, and Dr. Karen worked diligently to save him. Adonis had visitors everyday;
often his "mom", Mary, and sometimes volunteers from Second Chance. Everyone wanted to save this
sweet young boy. Sadly, that was not to be. When all of the test results were in, Adonis was determined
to have terminal cancer, and Mary decided that his suffering should not be prolonged. He left this
world in Mary's arms. We offer our deepest condolences to Mary, Dr. Karen, Arda, Sherri, and all the
others who tried so hard to save Adonis. Thank you for loving him so...
Athough Adonis is gone, his bill still remains. Dr. Karen was very gracious in providing all of her
work at cost, and always generously discounts for Rescue, but now she needs to be paid so
that she can afford to continue to help other Dobes. Please consider making a contribution to Adonis'
bill. Also - Second Chance has donated some great items to help raise money for Adonis. Unfortunately, we
were not able to get them out while Adonis was still with us, but do keep your eye on our upcoming E-Bay
Auctions, for them.
